This work explores notions of beauty, the beauty industry and its effects upon women and girls. It features an archetypal madonna, crowned with scalpels and syringes and marked for liposuction treatment, a bulimic Rapunzel, scales quoting the long-running TV advert, an angelic Granny knitting clone-like Barbie dolls. A woman shoots a mirror, while Satan steals the knowledge. Two little girls observe from a grey world of plastic rubbish. The stained glass was made using a combination of traditional and experimental techniques including engraving, sandblasting, painting and layering.
The original work, which took the artist 12 weeks to make, was made using hand blown, flashed glass which was cut, sandblasted, diamond filed, engraved, painted, fired and layered. The halo is decorated with glass beads and the flowers are tinted with oil paint and inks.
The original piece can be seen as part of The John Ruskin Prize 2019: Agent of Change showing at The Holden Gallery, Manchester until 24 August 2019.
