Artist work statement:
The growing ageing population of Britain presents a challenge for modern society. Many people are living without companionship and support, which would, in past generations, have been provided by smaller close-knit communities. Today we are becoming more isolated and lonely as we age. Surely this is a paradox when we are living an age of global communication? This photo-collage uses a drawing based on a photograph by Martin Hickling, which he took at Rawtenstall on a “1940s wartime weekend” on the Bury steam railway. It is one in a series of works highlighting elderly isolation.
